Judging Criteria

Here is a guide to the various components of the dance that the Judges will be evaluating when working out the placing of competitors for each event.

Variety and Content

Judges will be looking for a range of moves to be danced during your performance. Varying the range of figures/moves will gain higher points. A component of classic/traditional figures/moves would be recommended for certain events, such as Strictly/Apprentice Lindy, West Coast Swing and Balboa, showing Judges an understanding of the unique style of that dance.

Execution and Partnership

This is where technique comes into play. How well that you actually dance the steps depends a lot on good solid technique. Dancing WITH your partner, good leads and following, smooth transitions and good frame will score high marks. Remember: It ain-t what you do, but the way that you do it! That's what gets results.

Projection and Showmanship

That extra quality which holds the audience's attention. The polish, extra degree of professionalism or flair.

Degree of difficulty

Above the norm: Your execution of very difficult movements and steps requiring intricate and agile moves.

Timing and basic rhythm

Timing is everything: Timing is the identifiable link between the dancer and the music. Dancing in time with the music, remaining in time throughout the performance and how well the dancers relate to the variety of rhythm and tempo changes is critical.

TEAMS AND SHOWCASE

Variety & choreography

You are evaluated on what you do, whether choreographed or spontaneous. This means: how the dance is arranged to the music starting with your entrance, moving into the body of the number, concluding with your exit or ending; musical interpretation; variety; contrast of rhythms; and style with a variance in difficulty. Longer is not necessarily better. Keep things short and sweet.
